Dance Works

On Shore (2022)

A dance film set on Sullivan’s Island, SC created around the juxtaposition of different interpretations people have of being on the shore of the ocean, such as freedom versus tentativeness and ebbing versus flowing.

Bridging Isolation (2020)

A dance film created during the COVID-19 pandemic; Bridging Isolation highlights the sense of solitude that many felt while under the stay-at-home order. Bridges, commonly a metaphor for establishing a connection, serve as the setting for this film. Despite dancing in these public spaces where so many people have connected with one another, this film shows one dancer experiencing isolation, loneliness, and a hunger for human connection.

pass/codes (2021)

pass/codes, an MFA thesis work, explores gestural code switching and passing tactics that queer people use to navigate complex scenarios they encounter in heteronormative social situations.

Below is a solo excerpt of pass/codes in which the dancer struggles with the oppressive weight that societal expectations place on clothing and gender presentation. As she tries on the articles of clothing, she explores stereotypical movement qualities assigned to them and feels discomfort in subscribing to one or another. This short study only scratches the surface in showing one of the many ways that society polices gender, sexuality, and self expression.

BOUNDunbound (2019)

This work was presented as part of the Association of Graduate Students in Dance Spring Showing at UNCG. Exploring the juxtaposition between bound and free themes in movement and space, this work addresses the often oppressive actions by religious organizations on many individuals in the queer community in contrast to the freedom one may feel when coming out of the closet and accepting oneself.

eXhale (2018)

Performed February 2018 at the North Carolina Dance Education Organization Conference by Northwest School of the Arts Students

eXhale explores breath as a necessary human function and the different ways that we use our breath to facilitate movement. From smooth, even breathing patterns to choppy, percussive exhales, this piece allows the dancers to acknowledge their natural rhythms as well as their intentional choices with every inhale and exhale.
